Dimitar Nikolov Assenov, better known as Hadji Dimitar is one of the most famous Bulgarian leaders. He died on Mount Bouzloudja 28 years. For his death wrote a poem Hristo Botev "Hadji Dimitar".

Dimitar in Sliven was born into the family of Nicholas and trader Marinka Assenov. When she was 2 years, he and his family went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and since then has Hadji Dimitar.

During Hadzhistavrevoto uprising in 1862, Hadji Dimitar go in the mountains with a band all summer and wade through the mountains.

In the spring of 1864 included the detachment of the leader Stojan (Stoyan Popov Sliven) as a bearer. Band was 12 people and aims to kill Tarnovo Greek bishop. Before you enter in Veliko Tarnovo band broke up and separated from the gang chieftain. Command is assumed by Hadji Dimitar which led them to the Sliven Balkan, and in August are returning back to Romania.


On May 21, 1865 at the home of Georgi Rakovski formed a band involving Hadji Dimitar and Stefan Karadja Yordan Jordanov 's - Indzheto, Peter and Todor Shivarov. On June 13, 1865 the band goes into the Danube town of Silistra and in Ludogorie heads to the Kotel Balkan. Operates in an area of the river Tunja, Tvarditsa Karlovo Gabrovo and the famous gathering haidouk Aglikina meadow. He returned to Romania in August.


In the spring of 1866 in Romania passed a detachment of 20 men led by three chiefs: Santa Zheljo, Hadji Dimitar and Stefan Karadja. Sliven Balkan reached where it is separated into three acts by autumn, and when collected and returned to Romania.


Passage of the band coincides with the publication of the memorandum of the Secret Revolutionary Committee to the Sultan and connect with him.


In the spring of 1868 in Romania formed the detachment of Hadji Dimitar and Stefan Karadja. Much of the rebels were legionnaires in the Second Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade. On 5 July 1868g. band crosses the Danube with a sail and down near the village Vardim. The first battle in the waters near the vineyards with a Turkish Karaisen posse of about 1000 people. Torn off by the pursuers and night transition reaches Karapanova Curia in the village of Upper Lipnitsa. Here on July 7, leads the band their second fight after making significant losses on the enemy and give one person dead and two wounded. On July 8 it Vishovgrad battle around the village in the area Dalgidol. Today there is a monument built.


On July 9 Kanladere, the land area of Vishovgrad, a few miles south - southeast of Dalgidol becomes bloody battle in which the band is broken. Wounded and captured Stefan Karadja. Under the direction of Hadji Dimitar other 58 people went to the mountains. Kanladere place today in the name of which means "bloody river" in Turkish, a fountain and a monument dedicated to fallen rebels and local people organized a celebration of the fourth battle, about 21 and July (July 9 old style).


At July 18, 1868 at Buzludja peak in the Shipka mountain is the last battle in which the detachment was killed and Hadji Dimitar.
