Since 1982. the beginning of systematic archaeological excavations of the fortress held by the Historical Museum in Sliven and AIM BAS. During the excavations have uncovered original architectural monuments - the walls, corner towers, north and south gates, the foundations of residential, industrial and military facilities, housing the remains of Slavic. Exclusive findings have scientific value in the eastern part of the fortress religious complex, consisting of nave basilica ednoabsidna with impressive size and unique shestkonhalen babtisteriy with pistsina which was richly decorated with frescoes and mosaics. They have made it possible to detect the early Byzantine fortress in Sliven Tsoida known in written sources. Extremely valuable to science are open printing of Boris I, collective finding of iron tools, ceramics rich, the bone objects and ornaments, a significant number of coins. After a break, archaeological excavations of the fortress began again in 2004. Their aim is the definitive study and conservation of architectural and archaeological monuments, exposure of the fortress with a view to turning it into one of the outstanding tourist attractions of the city and the inhabitants of the town of Sliven, in the area for cultural recreation.
