Bulgaria ranks fifth in the EU water quality for swimming in open water areas. This shows a summary report of the Commission on water quality in the EU in 2009.

According to the report before Bulgaria is Greece, Cyprus, France and Malta. Italy and Spain are ranked behind Bulgaria.

The pooled data for the Black Sea region indicated that only 4 areas of bathing waters in Romania (8.2%) correspond to more stringent requirements, compared with 91% correlation of bathing sites in Bulgaria.

In terms of bathing water, located inside, only Bulgaria and Slovenia have 100 percent compliance with the requirements. For the Mediterranean region, Bulgaria, Greece and France have more than 95% compliance with mandatory requirements.
